I went on to get my Instructors License in Motorcycle and Truck and have successfully taught truck driving for many years also.
I was the first and as far as I know, the only person in Australia to complete this graduate course and I even went a step further, I got a Graduate Certificate in Road Safety from QUT.
What does this matter or mean?
Well it means that I have gone to every length to understand the human, environmental, vehicle and social factors in vehicle crashes, I want to know so that I can teach better. The course I selected was actually designed for road engineers to enable their understanding of the social and psychological aspects of road safety.
Recognizing this, I honed in on a personalized graduate diploma/degree course which would specialize my career in road safety. I gained a teaching qualification at Murdoch university in 2000 and realized it was not for me. I preferred a one on one relationship to my valued students.
I went many steps further. In WA a Certificate 3 of Driving Instruction would allow Instructors to "avoid" a 3 year practical test. Accreditation and certification were becoming the norm.
Some years later, I wanted to validate and ensure a future in driver training and saw that the industry was going the way of most industries.
Well it was less than a week later when I was issued an Instructor License from the Transport Department in WA. I had endured a 2 hour driving test and a teaching test to see if I was capable of passing on knowledge to learner drivers.
Not to be perturbed, I phoned the relevant government authorities to ask of them the requirements to become a licensed driver trainer.
I responded to the advert and a person spoke to me with somewhat derision telling me that in order for me to be an Instructor, they would have to train me and get lots of dollars from me prior to employment. saw an advert in the "Sunday Times" which was calling for a Driving Instructor to work on a commission basis. Here I.
I moved from Esperance to Perth in 1997 February and was looking for new employment opportunities. I was lucky, I actually enjoyed the learning and most of it was first hand experience - dangerous and coal faced!.
As a young child, I was put on a tractor at about 8 years of age (too young according to latest research nowadays).
I first gained my Instructors license in Feb 1987 (WA no 3469) when, after spending 26 years in a country town in WA and recognizing a need for learner drivers not just to drive a car properly but to innately know the road rules and the values of these.
Driving Instructor License number DI499 (Tasmania).
L2 and P1 and overseas transitional license qualifications taught.
University qualified (B.A.B.Education Studies Road Safety and Graduate Certificate Road Safety). Instructor
